„Beak Heat“

from the gallery of Warren Thompson
Description:

Beak Heat- Charles Darwin theorized that the toucans's outside beak is a disply to attract mates. Others think the bill is used to pick fruit, rob eggs or to defend territory. Now scientists in Brazil and Canada say the beak also cools the bird, like an elephant's ears. Using heat-sensitive cameras, the researchers monitored toco tocans in a lab as the room heated up. More blood flowed to their bills, warming them and dissipating heat. Smithsonian 10/2009.
